A Whole New World Review

Happy Friday Everyone!

So this weekend I am going to see the Aladdin musical, and can’t be more excited. The movie came out in theaters a couple of weeks ago, and I haven’t seen it yet, but can’t wait until I do. I decided that since Aladdin is such a huge hit that today would be a great day to review an Aladdin Retelling. A Whole New World by Liz Braswell introduces you to a side of this fairytale that you never imagined was possible.

The description was taken from the Goodreads website:

“Welcome to a new YA series that reimagines classic Disney stories in surprising new ways. Each book asks the question: What if one key moment from a familiar Disney film was changed? This dark and daring version of Aladdin twists the original story with the question: What if Jafar was the first one to summon the Genie?

When Jafar steals the Genie’s lamp, he uses his first two wishes to become sultan and the most powerful sorcerer in the world. Agrabah lives in fear, waiting for his third and final wish.To stop the power-mad ruler, Aladdin and the deposed Princess Jasmine must unite the people of Agrabah in rebellion. But soon their fight for freedom threatens to tear the kingdom apart in a costly civil war.

What happens next? A Street Rat becomes a leader. A princess becomes a revolutionary. And readers will never look at the story of Aladdin in the same way again.”

This is the story of Aladdin that has never been told, and will make you see the classic in a whole new light. What would have happened if Jafar was able to get the lamp from the Cave of Wonders? Would Aladdin and Jasmine be together or will they be apart? This retelling also gives the reader a new side of Jasmine, where she is a Princess who can save herself, and doesn’t need a fake prince or any man to save her. This is part of the Twisted Tales series, and is actually the first book that started off the series. Since all the books are standalones you can read them in any order, and you can find the rest of the reviews on my blog for the remaining books as well.

A Whole New World was the first book I read because it was the first one to come out, and I have to say that it was an amazing way to kick off this series. Liz brings the readers into a new Agrabah, but she does it in such a way that the spirit of the original doesn’t get lost. All your favorite characters are back, and you will even get to meet new ones in the process. This is one book that anyone who loves Aladdin or Disney need to pick up as soon as possible, because this is one retelling you are not going to want to miss.

Go join Aladdin and Jasmine as they fight for the city they love!
