Happy Friday Everyone!
So Jane Eyre is another classic that I absolutely loved and I love reading retellings for it as well. When I came across this retelling, I will admit that I was really hesitant and skeptical at first, but decided to give it a chance and I wasn’t disappointed. Jane Slayre by Sherri Browning Erwin is a retelling of Jane Eyre with a paranormal twist.
The book description was taken from the Goodreads website:
“ READER, I BURIED HIM . ”
A timeless tale of love, devotion . . . and the undead.
Jane Slayre, our plucky demon-slaying heroine, a courageous orphan who spurns the detestable vampyre kin who raised her, sets out on the advice of her ghostly uncle to hone her skills as the fearless slayer she’s meant to be. When she takes a job as a governess at a country estate, she falls head-over-heels for her new master, Mr. Rochester, only to discover he’s hiding a violent werewolf in the attic—in the form of his first wife. Can a menagerie of bloodthirsty, flesh-eating, savage creatures-of-the-night keep a swashbuckling nineteenth-century lady from the gentleman she intends to marry? Vampyres, zombies, and werewolves transform Charlotte Brontë’s unforgettable masterpiece into an eerie paranormal adventure that will delight and terrify.”
This story keeps to the original story however, it throws in Vampires, Werewolves, and Demons. I know it sounds weird, but Sherri keeps to the true spirit of the original and the way she throws the paranormal goes so well with the story. It makes Jane more of a stronger female character, and puts a dark thrilling twist on Mr. Rochester. You will be drawn into the story and this is one ride you won’t want to get off of. The ending throws you for a loop, but its the best ending you could hope for.
This is one retelling any lover of the paranormal or Jane Eyre that you don’t want to miss. It won’t disappoint and will actually give you a new way of looking at a beloved classic. It takes nothing away from the original and leaves you wanting more from this author and from these amazing characters.
Go enjoy Jane Eyre’s paranormal adventure my fellow readers!
That sounds fun! My favorite of those kinds of books has to be Grave Expectations- Great Expectations with werewolves.
