Hey Everyone!
Today I decided to do another post with some author fun facts for you all! Today’s author of the day will be Emily Dickinson. She wrote some of the most beautiful poems I have read, and I was introduced to this wonderful author when I was in High School I believe. But how much do we really know about Emily Dickinson, besides she was a poet? I hope to answer that question with this post, and help you all learn something new about her!
Let’s get to the interesting facts!
- Her father was a United States Senator
- Only ten of her poems were published during her lifetime, because she kept the majority of her poems to herself. After her death, her sister discovered the collection and had them published
- Botany was a passion in her early years
- Her relationship with both her parents were strained
- Her family home as been turned into a museum
- Her poems were criticized because of the grammar she chose to use
- She died when she was 55 from a stroke, but throughout her life she suffered from other unspecified medical conditions
- Because of her reclusive nature, people around town referred to her as “the Myth”
- Emily considered herself a pagan
- Emily wrote a series of spicy love letters to an unnamed man, which are referred to as “the Master letters”
- She never married, but she did have a relationship with her father’s best friend Judge Otis Lord
- “Because I Cannot Stop For Death” uses the same meter as the Gilligan’s Island theme
Hopefully with the facts that I have provided for you, you learned something new about this amazing poet. If you have any facts about Emily that weren’t included, please feel free to add them in the comments below!
