Choosing Your Next Read

Hey Fellow Book Worms!

So, here is one of the new type of posts that I decided to do on my blog. When you decided to chose your next book, I know for me, it’s a difficult process. You start to figure out what you are in the mood for, if you want to go with this genre or this one, and it can become a little stressful to choose. I know that when I am trying to find a new book on my shelves I go through a couple of different mindsets, and decided to share them with you all, in case you all have the same problem as me sometimes.

Here are the techniques that I normally use when I am finding it difficult to make a choice:

Enie Meanie Minie Moe

I mainly use this method if I can’t decide between a couple of different books. I lay them out on my bed, and sometimes I include my Kindle as well. I play this game until I am left with one book, and that is the one I will read. Now, lord help me if it lands on my Kindle, because that is another stressful situation for me to figure out what to read.

Picking Genre To Read Next

So, I randomly have a lot of small mason jars, that I honestly can’t even remember why I bought them, but they definitely come in handy with this one. I write the different genres that I have on my Kindle and my bookshelves of books that I haven’t had the chance to read yet. I fold the pieces of paper up and place them in a mason jar, close the lid, and give it a good shake. I then remove the lid, close my eyes, and dig around until I have one in my hand. This tells me which genre I will read, and it’s up to me to chose the book in this genre.

Asking for Recommendations from Co-Workers

When I truly don’t know what kind of mood I am in or what book I want to read, I will ask a co-worker of mine, because I know she is a Book Nerd just like me. She has actually given me a lot of really good recommendations and has made me fall in love with different series. I bought the whole Shelby Nichols series because of her, and I wasn’t even done with the first book yet, lol. I also discovered the Amelia Peabody series, which I have also come to love. Asking a co-worker or anyone you know who loves reading as much as you, is always an excellent resource to use when you don’t know what to read next.

Reading The First Chapter

When I can’t figure out if I am going to be in the mood for a certain book, I will read the first chapter to see if it is going to grab my attention. If it doesn’t, then I won’t read it because I know I am not in the mood for it at that moment. This has nothing to do with the authors or the books themselves by any means. I have just come to understand that sometimes I go through moods where no book seems interesting to me, which means I have to take a break until I find that perfect book. This has also back fired on me, when I had to give up on a book 99 pages in, because I couldn’t stay focused and couldn’t lose my self in it, however I plan on going back to it one day and finishing it.

These are the things that I do when I am trying to figure out my next read. I would love to know what you all do when you are trying to figure out your next adventure, so please feel free to share it in the comments below!

  1. Great post! Choosing what to read next can be so difficult. I am not a mood reader, so my choice normally depends on my most anticipated reads, the genre, and how long I have owned the book.
